Can Breastfeeding Mothers Use CBD Oil Safely?

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its potential therapeutic benefits. As a result, many breastfeeding mothers are wondering if it is safe to use CBD oil while breastfeeding. The answer is not straightforward, as research into the effects of CBD on breastfeeding mothers and their babies is still limited. We know that CBD can be transferred to babies through breast milk, and that there is a potential for CBD products to be contaminated with substances that may pose a risk to the fetus or the breastfed baby, such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

However, the amount of CBD that reaches breast milk is minimal, and research has not yet confirmed the exact effects on a baby. Given the lack of research, it is best for breastfeeding mothers to avoid using CBD oil while breastfeeding. However, anyone interested in testing CBD while breastfeeding should talk to their doctor first. CBD has been promoted as the active ingredient in a variety of therapeutic products that have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antipsychotic, anticonvulsant and antidepressant properties.

It is understandable that it's not considered safe to use it while breastfeeding due to its potential benefits during the postpartum period. In animal studies, high doses of CBD in pregnant animals have been shown to impair the reproductive system of male fetuses. Research by the American Chemical Society suggests that all cannabinoids, including CBD and THC, like to adhere to fat and that breast milk is high in fat. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommend that doctors advise parents to refrain from consuming all cannabis products, including CBD, if they wish to breastfeed.

Discuss this with your midwife and a naturopathic doctor who specializes in using CBD as medical treatment and advice on breastfeeding. And while he's not comfortable suggesting CBD to a new parent who is breastfeeding, he acknowledges past cannabis use.
