Can You Take CBD Oil with Other Medications?

CBD has the potential to interact with many other products, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal products, and prescription drugs. When taken together, some medications can have serious consequences, while others may amplify each other's effects without negative side effects. It is important to understand the potential interactions between CBD and other medications to ensure safe and effective use. When CBD is taken in low doses, it will have little or no noticeable effect on the way medications are metabolized. However, higher doses of CBD can bind to a larger area of enzymatic activity and prevent a significant amount of the other drug from being metabolized.

This can lead to an increase in the concentration of the other drug in the body, which can cause serious side effects.

Antibiotics

are one type of medication that may interact with CBD. Studies indicate that the combined intake of CBD and antibiotics can amplify each other's effects without negative side effects. It is important to note that this interaction has only been studied in a clinical setting and more research is needed.

Alcohol

is another substance that interacts with CBD. In a clinical study, CBD, when consumed with alcohol, produced significant alterations in motor and psychomotor performance, overestimates of production time (estimation of alcohol content over several periods of time) and subjective responses that indicate some protective effects, including an accurate self-perception of intoxication and deficits.

Prescription Drugs

are another type of medication that may interact with CBD.

CBD inhibits CYP2C19 and CYP3A4 enzymes which catalyze the metabolism of N-desmethylclobazam (NCLb), an active metabolite of clobazam. This can lead to an increase in the concentration of NCLb in the body which is between 20 and 100% more potent than clobazam. Therefore, it is necessary to control the levels of clobazam and NCLb when these medications are used concomitant. CBD can also interact with other medications such as lisinopril (a blood pressure medication) and ibuprofen (an anti-inflammatory medication). When taken together with lisinopril, CBD can temporarily lower blood pressure even more than lisinopril alone, making you feel lethargic and weak.

When taken together with ibuprofen, CBD can increase the risk of liver damage. It is important to talk to your doctor before taking any medications together with CBD. CBD is a CB1 antagonist, a negative allosteric modulator in CB2 and an agonist of the transient cationic potential of subfamily V (TRPV) and of serotonin 1A receptors (5-HT1A). These properties produce anxiolytic, antipsychotic, anticonvulsant, antioxidant, analgesic and immunomodulatory functions which may cushion the harmful effects of THC such as psychosis. Interest in CBD as a treatment for pain, insomnia, anxiety and other ailments has steadily increased since Oregon and other states legalized cannabis (marijuana). However, it is important to be aware of potential interactions between CBD oil and other medications before taking them together.

Talk to your doctor about any concerns you may have about taking CBD oil with other medications.
