More than 100 cannabinoids have been isolated from cannabis, and two of the most important compounds are cannabidiol (CBD) and Δ9-THC. In 1940, Harvard-trained chemist Roger Adams successfully extracted CBD from cannabis, and in 1963, Raphael Mechoulam described its chemical structure. Since then, CBD has been investigated in the United Kingdom and classified as a food product, meaning that no medical claims can be made about it. In 1977, a small clinical trial was conducted in Brazil, where four epileptic patients received a daily dose of 200 mg of CBD and five received a placebo.
In the early 2000s, Miller and his group wanted to devise ways to persuade more farmers to grow varieties with CBD, which had largely been obtained from American marijuana since it produces no psychoactive effects. The important milestones in the pharmacohistory of individual cannabinoids include their discovery at the end of the 19th century, their pharmacological characterization that began in the 1940s, the structural elucidation and synthesis of (−) -Δ9-THC and (−) -CBD in the 1960s, and the discovery of the endogenous cannabinoid receptor system and ligands for these receptors. In recent years, understanding of CBD has grown significantly; more than 6 million people consumed it in the UK last year alone. I had been determined to connect the incipient CBD research I had heard about at symposiums abroad with the medical marijuana movement in California.
However, without oversight, this effort has been co-opted by an effort to make as much money as possible with the next big wellness trend. In a house in the hills a few hours north of San Francisco, Miller and his group sat in a circle to talk about the therapeutic potential of CBD and how to get people to take it seriously. According to a document received from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, no state control measures have been established in relation to CBD. Nevertheless, speculation driven by the government has seriously and unduly undermined its medical reputation.
Gardner was euphoric and began referring to his efforts as “Project CBD”, along with other supporters such as Mr. Tracing the trajectory of CBD from its origin to the present day offers a fascinating insight into this versatile cannabinoid and its history. Even so, some states where cannabis is legal have implemented strict testing standards, and many marijuana dispensaries offer authentic CBD both alone and in various proportions with THC.
